What is Homemaking?

When you hear the word “homemaker” what do you think of? What about the words “Black Homemaker?” While the former may conjure visions of privilege and even entitlement, I would argue that neither are true. Oxford dictionary defines a homemaker as, “a person who manages the household of his or her own family, especially as a principal occupation.” I am sure that sounds like you. It is your birthright to live as the divine feminine goddess you were destined to be.

I would ask that you consider the fact that you live in a body. Your body is your first home. How are you caring for it? How is your body doing? What are you feeding it? Are you exercising it? Your principal occupation will be to tend to it. Are you single? Married? Widowed or divorced? Do you live in a place that you call your house or your home? Does it reflect you? Is it a sanctuary to all that enter your doors?

I know for a long time I just took into my home whatever someone gave me. Throwing away things that I could have repurposed. No art on the walls. Everything around me was so impersonal. Think about it, do you live on aisle 6 of Target? No. These items are the beginning not the end. Sis, we have to custom. That is how you get the “oh, wow! Where did you get that?” That is when you say. “Oh, this little thing? I made it.” Immediately you have done something just a little different and unique to you. I make mugs and I drink out of them all time. I wear my own earrings. You can too.

We live in turbulent times and when we cross the threshold every day we have to set up and maintain a conflict free zone. As a person that has lived for years in conflict in my home, I can confidently say, your environment matters. It can also change. But it starts with you. You can change the alchemy of your life and infuse this spirit into your surroundings and create abundance, similarly to the ways your grandparents did.

In your house, you are the heart of it. This is not a lowly position, but a high calling. I want to share my journey with you and hear about yours as well. This is not something to embark on alone. You need your village.

The Hope Chest is a virtual village for BIPOC mothers looking to maintain your hope and happiness wherever you are called to be in this moment. To reclaim their voices and agency through a powerful incarnation of the feminine nature.
